His face has the beginnings of a grin on it, and his hazel eyes twinkle as if he has just heard or told a joke. His right hand holds a white quill pen with a brass nib before a bit of parchment which bears the outlines of the image on this very trump. His legs are covered with blue cotton pants with brass rivets, a brass button, and are supported by a large brass buckle bearing the same symbol as the reverse of the card. Behind him on the wall are hung a variety of tools for gunsmithing, woodworking, horology, and numerous other creative endeavours. His white Stetson hat and shirt sit on the bench next to the ink well and the blade of a ‘Bowie’ knife without a handle. Colors: Red, White, Blue, and polished Brass. Symbol: His symbol is a Lemat revolver framed by two goose-feather quills, and is depicted on the backs of all trumps he draws and is engraved in his brass belt buckle. Number: Five.  HistoryJohann "John" Payne's mother, Sophie Payne, was an undertaker and gravedigger of Dutch extraction from 1872 Kansas in Shadow Earth. It is believed that his father met her on a visit to see Florimel, although the specific identity of his father is not widely known. It has been confirmed that he survived the pattern, although it is unclear when he walked it. Sophie Payne died during Chaos' attack on Amber. Damien now lives in what was Sophie's home in Amber. He was once Govenor General of Texorami City in Victor Earth. Many of his early years were spent in the company of Damien in that shadow. He earned the sobriquet "The One Man Army" after he was the sole survivor (and victor) of the Battle of the Alamoe in Victor Earth. Subsequent to their returning to Amber, Johann and Damien seem to have had a falling out on matters of politics, although they still speak on other topics from time to time. He and Damien clearly have, or had, an intimate relationship, although the nature of that relationship is the subject of some debate. Father, brother, and lover have all been suggested in the past. Johann does not appreciate suggestions that Damien is more than one of the above, but otherwise has made no comment on the matter. He invented what is considered the modern printing press in Amber, and made use of it to print essays, broadsheets, fliers, and cartoons of a political nature. Though scathing, idealistic, and one-sided, his writing is exemplary*. Many of his writings were originally anonymous, though he confirmed authorship of several of his essays shortly before leaving Amber for parts unknown nine years ago, immediately after publication of his final cartoon. (In actuality, he left for Arden.) He was accused, though never convicted, of being a seditious libeler in Amber around the time he revealed his authorship and left town. While in Arden, he expressed dissatisfaction with Julian's lack of offensive action. Discontent with the status quo has led him to return to Amber very recently. Trivia
