Angharad, Duchess of MoinsAt first glance, she seemed to be an innocent young girl, all wide green eyes and glittering jewels, with her soft lisping voice and her interest in anything and everything. Almost all who met her fell under her spell. She attained the throne of Rebma by marrying Llewellyn, son of Queen Arian, the daughter of Lir, who had been Rebma's greatest hero and only historical King. Since Arian had no daughters at the time of her death, her son's wife became the queen. By that time Moire, daughter of Angharad and Llewellyn, had already been born. Angharad, or Moins as she was often called since of her mother's holdings on the outskirts of Rebma were the Duchy of Moins, had not married for love, and while she grew comfortable with Llewellyn over time her ever-youthful mind sought after new interests to assuage her boredom. Her husband turned a blind eye to her infidelities and focused his attention on his own. After all, there are plenty of fish in Rebma. When Llewellyn died, Angharad turned her attention to her next political alliance. Rebma at that time not only paid tribute to Amber but often found itself at the mercy of rogue undersea pirates from the area who took advantage of its lack of trained militia and isolated status to plunder the treasures of the aquatic realm. Angharad decided to take a risk. When the next chest of tribute arrived in Amber, Angharad herself was inside it, prepared to be there when it was opened for King Oberon. Angharad sprang out, giggling as if she were the child she appeared instead of a mature and powerful woman. Oberon never particularly fell for the charade, but he was amused by her trick and enchanted by her laughter. At the time he was having difficulties with his wife Clarissa. Angharad required no offer of marriage, no patriarchal obligations. She wanted a child, a treaty, and for her military to be trained by the best Amber had to offer: namely Benedict. Most people would have said that was a lot to require for a few weeks of pleasure and the chance to spit in Clarissa's eye, but Oberon accepted and claimed later he never regretted his choice. Both enjoyed their time together immensely, and when they met from time to time afterward it was with great fondness and respect. To show that respect (and to irritate Clarissa), Oberon formally recognized Angharad's second daughter, Llewella as his own. When Moire was fifty years old, Angharad stepped down as Queen of Rebma in favor of her daughter, retiring to the estates of Moins where she spent the remaining centuries of her life. It is said she continued to entertain interesting men, wrote volumes of poetry and political treatises, and carried on the occasional correspondence with Oberon. She was interred in the undersea garden of the Rebman Palace a little over two hundred years ago. |
