Dawn

Her early years, like those of her peers, are shrouded in mystery. She has vague memories of discussions between people she doesn’t know and Vikund, the man who seemed to make regular appearances and whose arrival inevitably presaged a period of change. The one constant during her childhood was the Amber Guilds that seemed to take charge of her education and development. She was occasionally allowed to mix with other children, but they had the same narrow world view and could not offer much insight into the land beyond the city.

All that changed with adolescence. Her visits to the Guild Houses became rarer, and her training in the pleasure palaces began, not just in Amber but across the Golden Circle. Vikund’s visits became more frequent, and he was always full of questions, and usually an expensive gift. She met other girls who had undergone the same training she had, and eagerly embraced tricks of the trade. Hers was not a solely cosseted existence, however. For reasons that were not fully explained, she received self-defence training and was warned that her time of testing was approaching, and to be ready.

What exactly occurred during what is known among the Guilds as the Night of the Hunter is unclear, for Dawn will not speak of it, but it seems to involve a test of skill involving significant personal risk. Not all of Dawn’s friends emerged from the trial, which made her value those who remained the more so. As a result, beneath her easy smile there is toughness and sadness that some of her contemporaries might lack.

Elocution lessons have not done much to curb Dawn’s accented Thari, but some say it lends to her charm and (deceptive) aura of innocence. She is excited about her appointment to the staff of the Ramblin’ Queen and eager not to let anyone down.
