Sorcery and the Pattern or the Logrus

Index | Time Under Chaos | Creating a Character | Sorcery Power | Sorcery and the Pattern or the Logrus

Perhaps the most potent benefit of this Pattern/Logrus Sorcery that the Magic of Shadow lynchpin becomes obsolete. Because the Sorcerer is now fueling their spells with the essence of Pattern or Logrus, the spell will no longer be weakened by the lack of Magic in any particular Shadow. It will be cast at full strength, even if you happen to be in Amber or the Courts of Chaos. Indeed, the closer the Sorcerer is in proximity to their Power’s ‘source,’ the more potent the spell will become. Furthermore, the Law of Shadow can now be ignored, and spells transmitted through Shadow via Logrus Tendrils or Pattern conduits. There is a reason Pattern/Logrus Sorcerers are feared throughout Shadow.

At its most basic, Pattern/Logrus Sorcery allows the Sorcerer to now utilize his or her Powers in addition to the effects of any spell they cast. The limits of this are generally limited only by the imagination of the Sorcerer and the patience of the GM. Although the more common ritual spells are a good guide as to what is possible with Pattern/Logrus Sorcery, the true limits of what can be accomplished can be stretched quite far.

Pattern Sorcery infuses spells with the Pattern, so they become more stable, are more difficult to dispel, and can alter Reality more effectively. Pattern Sorcerers can more easily understand probability, so they can literally manipulate Fate itself. Obviously, Pattern Defenses are virtually useless against Pattern-based Sorcery.

Logrus Sorcery infuses spells with the Logrus, so they become extremely powerful, although their results may be slightly erratic (which is why controlling Logrus Sorcery requires level 9 in Chaos, instead of only level 7 in Pattern). Logrus Sorcery can tear apart and cut through Shadow, warping it violently (think of the Black Road and you get a good idea of what a Logrus Sorcerer can do, if they put their mind to it). Obviously, Logrus Defenses are virtually useless against Logrus-based Sorcery.

It should be noted that the a conflict of between Logrus and Pattern Sorcerers are, to put it mildly, epic in scale. Because their spells are fueled by the Logrus and Pattern, the contact between the two powers causes hideous damage to the Shadow in which the conflict takes place (literally ripping it apart with the release of energies). Anyone near one of these conflicts had best head into Shadow as fast as they can and pray they don’t get killed in the crossfire. Because of their violent natures, these conflicts almost always end with one or both combatants dead.
