Goran Vladic

Index | Time Under Chaos | Player Characters | Goran

Physical Appearance

His tall, lean build is the one physical characteristic Goran Vladic cannot change. Everything else depends upon the task at hand. He can dress up tidy and refined if that's what's needed to blend with the social crowd, or he can be filthy and bedraggled to fit in at the docks. Anything it takes to get the job done. Generally, he prefers casual dress - loose leggings and shirts, shaggy auburn hair combed but not immaculately so, a hint of dirt under his fingernails. His blue eyes can be intense, but are most often sparkling good-naturedly, and it is rare for him to drop the cocky smirk. When speaking casually, a hint of an odd accent can still be heard creeping through his Thari.

Personality Description

Goran lives in the 'now.' He rarely talks about his past, and he plans only far enough ahead to see his next meal. Or so he lets on, anyway. Goran learned early to be resourceful and clever. Survival depended on it. His uncle taught him how to fix truck motors with bread ties and chewing gum. Nothing was wasted and everything could be useful. The same applied to people. Goran is an observer, a tinkerer, a charmer. He is friendly and outgoing. He gets things done.

But sometimes, when the sun begins to set and the tasks are accomplished, he can be heard strumming an odd guitar-like instrument on his second-story porch, singing softly in a strange language. The music is the secret passage to the heart of the boy within.

Background/History

Goran was raised by his mother and uncle in a shadow called Srebija, a totalitarian state run by a regime called the Politska. The Politska kept firm restrictions on the populace, but they also kept the peace and were generally tolerated, if not liked, by the masses. The family ran a small cafe and eked out a living by being frugal and resourceful. Goran discovered early on that he had a talent for charm and became good at working the local Politska officers for favored status on sometimes "questionable" goods. As a result, the Vladic's cafe always had good stocks of liquor and food.

When Goran was a teenager, a stranger came to the cafe. Recognizing the probability that Goran was his son, the man insisted that Goran must come with him, to take steps to ensure his safety. There were troubles in the Homeland, he said, and Goran must be protected against them. Goran went. When he returned, he had new abilities and the beginnings of knowledge about how to use them. The abilities made it much easier to make "acquisitions," but they also attracted attention, so Goran stuck close to his old ways.

Then things went bad. The Politska, now an old and tired bureaucracy, crumbled, and anarchy erupted. Men were being rounded up and shot, and whole families were forced from their homes. Goran tried to convince his mother and uncle to go away with him the same way he had gone with his father. But they refused to leave, believing that no harm would come to them.

The Death Sqaud came while Goran was out. When he returned, his mother tried to warn him, but a Death Squad officer shot her in the back. Goran doesn't remember what happened then. The next thing he knew, he was driving a Death Squad truck through the snowy mountains, dizzy with blood loss from the many bullet wounds he knew should have killed him. All he remembered was that those men would never kill anyone again. He shifted gears, crested a ridge and decided to go someplace warmer...

All roads lead to Amber, his father had said. When he recovered from his injuries, Goran decided to test that theory.

Goran is portrayed by Ethan Hawke, and played by Brenda McCartney.
