 Y'liena Armaen, Dybele of the Seekers for the HornMother of Flora. The Seekers for the Horn were a small but highly respected religious sect operating out of Amber and Begma. Y'liena Armaen, their Dybele (or High Priestess) was supposed to be sweet, innocent and virginal. Oberon met her on a diplomatic visit to Begma, where he made a concession to the Unicorn-based sect and took some time out of his busy schedule. It obviously had nothing to do with rumors of an uncanny, even godlike beauty. What Oberon found was that the rumors of her beauty were not exaggerated, but those of her innocence had been. Y'liena, or Dybele, as she was also called, was a surprisingly shallow woman, especially for a priestess. Her title had been gifted her due to her surpassing beauty, and ever since she had been given it, at the age of twelve, she had been spoiled and surrounded by beautiful things and aspirants who sincerely believed that their lovely virgin priestess would lead them to the Unicorn. It took exactly three hours for Oberon to render Y'liena unfit to be Dybele for the Seekers, but the Begman cadre had enough self-preservation simply to ask politely if he might take the young girl back with him to Amber, since she was useless to them at the moment. Oberon agreed. He married Y'liena almost immediately on return to Amber. What he hadn't counted on was her sudden interest in politics and continued devotion to the Unicorn. She sought hard to make the Seekers of the Horn, or some other sect of Unicorn-based religion more powerful in Amber, and stuck her pretty little fingers into every piece of court-based intrigue she could find, though much less successfully than either Clarissa or Cymnea. Oberon tired of her quickly as a wife, divorced her and set her aside for Rilga, but continued to visit her occasionally. She remained set up beautifully in Amber for the remainder of her life. It was fairly common knowledge that she was the King's mistress, and that he cared for her enough to be reasonably jealous if another man asked for her hand in marriage. He referred to her continually as 'Dybele,' which led to some confusion in the royal records when Florimel was born. Y'liena Armaen died at the age of thirty-eight, still widely considered the most beautiful woman in Amber (not counting Oberon's daughters). She fell from her horse while riding back to her estates from Amber and died of complications. |
