Addressing Chaosians

"Thank you for the generous compliment," she replied. "I'm Helena Barimen-Ishtar, of House Ishtar. And you are...?"

"Morgan," he answered. "Morgan Deirdreson, by your customs, though I don't bother with that name myself. My mother and Merlin's father were full-blood siblings, so I'm his closest male relative in residence."

How do Chaosians address each other?

Like many other questions, the short answer, like many things in Chaos is, "it depends".

But there are some guidelines.

However, especially in tangled or complicated situations, people often have preferences of their own that, by the manners of Chaosian etiquette, should be respected when at all possible.

By House

The traditional way a non-titled Chaosian is introduced for the first time, or introduces herself, is with their name(s) and House name. Using this continually, though, with the same form, is akin to Teal'C in Stargate constantly calling Daniel "Daniel Jackson"

By Bloodline

More commonly, where the House is known or revealed, Chaosians are referred to by one of their bloodlines. This is usually the higher ranked bloodline of the two parents. Male offspring get the "son" or "sson" appelation to their parents name, daughters get "sdottir" or "dottir". Some Chaosians, like Ingrey, apply this formula to the Amber Royals.

This Bloodline can be confused and unclear if there is adoption involved, or if one of the parents is disgraced or out of favor. Ideally, the appellation used is a blood parent with full custody and status, if the other parent does not possess these qualities.

In such situations, reverting to the formal, by House, can be safer. In such tangled situations, people often have preferences of their own that should be respected. For example, Helena responds favorably to Helena Torrensdottir even if Lord Torren is only her father by adoption and not blood.

Alternatively, the form "Of the Line" can be used if no closer descent can or should be named but acknowledgment of the bloodline is to be made.

By Title

Nobility, of course are referred to by their title unless they give permission to drop it or are addressed by a noble which out ranks them. And even in the latter case, it is good form to use the title, unless one is deliberately not mentioning it.

Thus Uther Sawall, with the title of Duke, is referred to as Duke Sawall. Subsequent to the initial introduction, nobles short of Royal status are Lord and Lady with the House name.

Tear Helgram, as a Baroness, is entitled to be titled as Baroness Helgram upon first meeting and Lady Helgram in subsequent references in conversation.

In cases where there are multiple Nobles of the same rank and House in the vicinity, the first name is added.
