After Council Vikund and Cly

"Very good, Your Highness," said Vikund. "Would you mind if I stay with a you a while? I'm quite interested to meet these visitors myself."

"Not at-" Cly began.

It was therefore fortunate that. at this very moment, a breathless servant came running down the corridor. He managed to gasp out his message ...

"Lady Clytemnestra! Lord Vikund! The Prime Minister says ... the guests are come ... in the Throne Room!"

"Seeking our guests? I fear they have already bustled off to their chosen destinations. Vikund - Jurt and Morgan are escorting my protege the Baronness and her guest, Lady Tasha Minobee, to Five Corners. That is, if they have already managed to winkle that pert pet of hers from his fastnesses in the kitchen, which I sorely doubt. Clytemnestra, you'll find that your sister and her friend are being escorted to their rooms by Damien. Doubtless you are shocked, but I felt it was time to give him some honest employment ... However, you will doubtless want to hurry after them and fall on each other's shoulders weeping, or whatever it is that long sundered siblings do. Everyone is invited to dinner ... I've asked your sister and her friend to join me for tea. The invitation extends to you too, unless you feel that two meals a day eaten in my company would be too great an imposition for your constitution, my daughter."

"If I take a strong enough purgative, I should save you any embarassment at tea, Father," Clytemnestra said without missing a beat. "I pray that you didn't muss your makeup shedding your own tears of joy. We'll be there." She smiled at Vikund, and it actually lasted long enough to include Mandor, as well. "If you'll both excuse me. No, please, Father, don't get up."

"Until later, Princess," Vikund said, bowing as she took her leave.

Mandor watched her go with a faint smile.

"Excuse me," Vikund said to Mandor, "it seems all the introductions are in hand and I would hate to impose. I shall be about my usual business. I shall see you at dinner." He repeated the gesture and departed to his own offices.

This time the acknowledgment was a simple inclination of the head.

Vikund had a lot to think about, and for once he had a little time to do so. Clytemnestra had done him a great service, whether she realised it or not, and he was not going to waste the opportunity. He gathered a few things from his office into a file and called for a carriage. By the time he reached the East Wing entrance he preferred, it was ready and waiting. He checked his pocket watch before stepping inside. He shut the door firmly and pulled down the blinds. At least now he was back in the comfort of his own world of shadows.
