He has a Wererathe Grandmother. Ishtar is a banner house to Hendrake and known for its skills in the field of medicine. An accomplished physician and psychiatrist himself, Torren has focused his House's efforts in research of new techniques and medicines and honed refinement of old ones. Adepts from Ishtar make sought-after battle mages, for what spells and skills can be used to heal can also be used to destroy. When it was discussed what House Princess Fiona of Amber would marry into (after Patterfall she had the choice to either marry or suffer imprisonment, and she chose marriage), Torren offered his sevices to further Ishtar's status in the eyes of Hendrake, and Hendrake in the eyes of the Emperor. When Torren discovered that Fiona had previously delivered twins and had them hidden away in shadow, he pulled strings to let Fiona keep one of her daughters—besides keeping Fiona happy, Helena made an excellent live-in hostage against Fiona's good behavior. Although neither Torren nor Fiona completely trust each other, there's cautious fondness on both sides, and they've come to an understanding. Their relationship is a complicated game of cat-and-mouse, back-and-forth, with Helena often in the middle. Outwardly friendly and charming, Torren has an easygoing smile that belies the darker thoughts behind his eyes. |
