 Paulette ValerianPaulette Valerian was a young woman of Amber City, the young widow of the notoriously cruel Count Carloff Valerian. There were many rumors in the city of how Lord Valerian had treated his pretty young wife, and why none of their children had survived it. Paulette, as a result, was jaded and moody, and expected very little of life or of men. When offered the chance to be King Oberon's mistress, she took it. She had no desire ever to marry again, and connecting with Oberon was a good way to keep other men away. Oberon never claimed to be a gentle man, but he knew a lot about life. Pretty little Paulette found out quickly that her moods would send him from the room, and then she would not see him for weeks. She liked the world better when he was nearby, so put aside her sense of grievance and cheered up. She spent a good deal of time in the less than upper crust parts of the city, gambling and enjoying herself and cultivated a reputation as the strangest of women. She never returned to the Valerian estates. It was at least ten years after she began to see Oberon romantically that Random was born, and three years later for Mirelle. Amazed that she had finally become a parent, Paulette doted on her children. Mirelle's death on the Pattern devastated her, and she died shortly after. |
