"The theory that His Majesty [Rinaldo] is a descendant of Amber is, however, not entirely clear. Some would prefer there to be no such association; others desire it ardently." A veteran of Kashfa’s cut-throat politics, an Emir and head of clan in his own right, what Karim Bin Maoud asks for, he usually gets. Certainly, when he asked to be posted to Amber, no-one objected. A frequent patron of the “Ramblin’ Queen”, he is certainly a man who enjoys the finer things. He is also someone used to getting what he wants, and ruthless against those he considers his enemies. He always seems relaxed and genial, but will not accept slights to his own honour or that of Kashfa, and will back threats with steel. The Kashfan embassy is easily the most heavily garrisoned in Amber, and most of the soldiery are personal bodyguards of “Lord” Karim (his actual title is cumbersome and almost unpronouncable). Sooner or later, someone will avenge a loose word or deed, often in the dead of night. A nomad by birth, Karim is used to dispensing and expecting swift justice. |
