I've got a different proposition. Either you shut up or I leave the room. How's that grab you? Frae Thorn, Duke of one of the richest, oldest and most influential families in Amber, is a man apart. Widely considered one of the greatest warriors and military minds of his generation, he haunts Amber City like a melancholy ghost. He doesn't precisely whine that a good deal of what was his land has been requisitioned for the use of Chaosian nobles, but his moodiness speaks volumes, although these are novels that those in power rarely heed. Despite his displeasure, Frae has seen fit to work with and aid King Merlin and his regime in small ways, though he resists any aid to the military. He is certainly not an antagonist. Some have said this is due to his fierce hatred of Princess Islain and her friends, while others suppose he is simply smart enough to attempt to hold what little power remains his. Frae is well-known in Amber for his intelligence, his skill with the blade, and his strange adherence to a code of honesty, courage and honor. In fact, he is something of a hero among many of the young men in the city. Rumor has it Frae was also Islain's biggest mistake. As a boy, he was a staunch supporter, even a sycophant of King Oberon, and while he wholeheartedly supported Eric's Regency, he refused to admit that anyone besides Oberon could be King of Amber. Too popular and too powerful to easily silence, Islain took a different tack (the rumors say) by making Frae fall in love with her. Here the rumors diverge. Some say that he used her as much as she used him - others say that he truly believed he could change her and melt her icy heart. Whatever the case, all the stories agree that they were an item for ten years - much longer than Islain usually kept any one man - and at the end of that time neither could stand the sight of the other. However, while Islain was and is content to simply ignore Frae's existence and shrug off any of his actions, he has become obsessed with her. He keeps very good track of her life, location and contacts and seeks to undermine her at every turn. When asked why he would do such a thing, Islain laughs and says he wants attention. Frae's response is somewhat different: "That vampire bitch wanted a war. Now she's got one." |
