Merivel had a long night.

After taking his leave of his fellow Maester, Merivel returned to spell the eldest of the three Maesters in watching Lord Hardy for a while before gratefully taking the opportunity to return to his quarters for some much needed rest.

Of course, as is wont on these occasions, while Merivel sought rest, rest did not in turn seek Merivel. While not a truly sleepless night, his rest was far less refreshing than what the young Maester of Clearwater might have liked.

And thus it was with red eyes and a slightly clumsy set of movements that, once dressed, Merivel came down early for a spot of breakfast, and to learn what his travel arrangements to Clearwater were going to be.

He found Lady Hardy in the hall, not breaking her fast herself, but giving directions to the Steward about hot food for Ser Godfrey and Ser Herys Bolton, who would be returning from their vigil soon. She greeted Merivel politely.

"Maester ... you are an early riser this morning! Are you still puposing to leave us? I have set events in chain."

Visibly weary, Merivel nodded before finding a chair to sit in. Despite his training, he practically slouched in the seat. "I must return to Clearwater, and so am grateful for any help, Lady, that you might give in that regard." the Maester said.

"I am afraid," said Lady Hardy with regret, "that the current state of affairs here means that we cannot give you the escort that my husband and I would wish. But two men at arms will ride with you to the Kingsroad, and beyond - should you not find a suitable merchants' party travelling in the direction of Clearwater."

"Since I must leave with haste, I must deal with whatever travelling circumstances that I'm faced with." Merivel said, with a heavy nod. "Your efforts are appreciated, Lady." he added sincerely.

She beckoned a servant over to offer him food.

Merivel looked up at the approach of food, setting himself a place and began eating with a resignated air about him.

He was not alone for long. Ser Herys Bolton and Ser Godfrey Hardy came in. Both looked tired after their all night vigil in the godswood and there was a tension about Ser Godfrey that suggested a man barely holding himself in check.

They both came across to the high table where Merivel was sitting and took seats there.

"Good morning, Maester Merivel," said Ser Godfrey. "Do you know how my brother fares?"

"I do, Ser Godfrey." Merivel said, giving nods of respect to both Sers. He paused a beat and then continued. "He continues to live but he does not thrive. Maester Sewell and I have done what we can thus far to help him recover."

Merivel paused another beat and continued. "I only wish that unshirkable duties at Clearwater did not mandate that I take my leave this morning of Holdfast, else I would return to help further your brother his Lordship's recovery as much as I can."
