He was born only about a year before his sister, and they were often taken for twins. Gavrin was a gentle, though indecisive, boy who enjoyed drawing, running and climbing. At Holdfast, his father arranged for him to work with the master-at-arms and even allowed Syndra to practice with him as encouragement. Though Gavrin never lacked for determination, talent eluded him. He did, however, enjoy teaching his sister and his little brother what he learned. He and his cousin Godwyn were close friends. At the age of eight, however, Gavrin, along with his brother, was cut down in the epidemic of summer fever that swept through the North that year.
