Background

Ken only knows that his parents were from the streets, and that Merey Colke raised him, sharing what little she had working as a house-mother at a low-rent brothel in the squalid streets of Anvil along with her son Djed. Though she cared for them as best as she could, she worked long hours and he found himself alone in the hard city. As he grew, he came to assume that his mother had been one of the girls in the brothel- one that he saw every day. Or she died. Whatever it was, Merey wasn't talking, and he respected her enough not to pry- no matter how he wanted to know who he was, or where he came from. He and his brother became runners for one of the gangs- taking things where ever they needed to go.

At the young age of 12, Ken made his first kill. One of Merey's friends didn't like the fact that she no longer enjoyed his company. Ken took care of the situation, though later they found out that the man had connections. Ken had to leave home, and Merey sent Djed with him so that he wouldn't be alone. Once on the streets, they ran full time with the thieves and cutthroats that they had been running for, eventually graduating to more hands on work. He and his brother became an able team, and always left money for Merey back at her place. She never pushed for them to come back home, but that didn't mean that he didn't see it in her eyes. But Djed always had his eyes on bigger and better scores, and Ken still couldn't stay still without the power of the gang to keep those at bay that wanted his blood. Besides, he wasn't going to leave his brother. He owed it to Mery to make sure that he had someone watching his back.

In all honesty, Ken had more of a talent for the work, though he was supposed to be the brawn to Djed's brains. But he was happy being the bruiser- as long as his brother was satisfied, he was. Unknown to him, Djed saw that his brother was more capable, and envy brewed in his heart. One of the higher ups came to Djed with a mission, and instead of including his brother, he took someone else. Ken raced after them when he found out, but was too late. His brother died when things went wrong.

Ken had failed, and couldn't face Merey with the knowledge of what had happened, so fled the city.
