Like all Emperors before him, Swayvill rose to the position by amassing enough popular support among the other major Houses to solidify his ascension to the position after the death of Kierra II. In the Courts of Chaos, there is no inheritance by simple birthright, the position is competed over by mainly strong candidates of the Major Houses, and not only or always when the position is vacant. The competition of these candidates for the Throne of Thelbane can be vicious and devious enough that some historians have dubbed the selection of new Emperors "election by assassination." The nearest Earth parallels lie in the history of the Holy Roman Empire, and of the Dark Age Visigoths. |
