Praetor

Index | Time Under Chaos | Concerning Chaos | Chaosian Professions | Praetor

This is an administrative/judicial office – often with political dimensions – usually associated with the Thelbane. It is a flexible term; many praetors are little more than paper-pushers, doing time in administrative tasks that require some decision-making power on their way to bigger and better things. But as with many aspects of the Courts, context is everything. There have been praetors who functioned as advisors to the Emperor, praetors assigned military or diplomatic duties, and praetors whose duties corresponded more closely to the American “state’s attorney” or “independent prosecutor.” Praetors’ assignments may be task-specific and temporary or longer-term jobs, depending on the individual and on the government’s needs. In general a praetorship is not a “career” per se, yet for some people it has turned out that way. The perceived status conferred by a praetorship is, obviously, quite variable.
