Limits of Sorcery

Index | Time Under Chaos | Creating a Character | Sorcery Power | Limits of Sorcery

Sorcery, despite its potency, is not all-powerful. Its must adhere to certain rules and limitations that cannot be altered (although some can be bent). Although Shadow is infinite, there are universal paradigms that define sorcery and its limits. These restrictions are as follows:

Law of Shadow — Sorcerous effects (i.e. spells) cannot extend beyond the Shadow in which they are created. If affected in any way by the influence of another Shadow, the effects are immediately dispelled. Only through Pattern/Logrus Sorcery can any sorcerous effect move through Shadow.

Law of Creation — Nothing permanent can be conjured or created by Sorcery. Once the duration of a spell is complete, the conjuration will return to the ‘nothingness’ from which it came. Conjurations are also limited by the Law of Shadow. Things that already exist in a Shadow may be summoned freely (i.e. teleporting a horse from a nearby stable).

Law of Connection — No spell can affect an unseen and/or unknown target unless a Sympathetic Connection has been established. Even if a connection exists, the Law of Shadow still holds true.

Law of Power — Sorcery cannot permanently change or destroy the fundamental nature of something Real. For example, sorcery cannot permanently alter a Shapechanger’s Avatar form, affect the Pattern or Logrus, summon the Primal Chaos, change aspects of a Real Shadow (i.e. alter the rules of a PC's Personal Shadow), or create and/or destroy Trumps. However, Pattern/Logrus sorcery can bend, but not break, this Law.
