Gabriel (aka Keary Snow)Index | HomePage | PlayerCharacters | GabrielAkaKearySnow Gabriel's real name is Keary; "Snow" was added as a surname, because it was assumed that he was some young lordling's bastard from the north. No one is really sure. Keary was left on the doors of Marshend's small Sept, with no note or any identification of any kind. Life is hard in the North, and there are always orphans; Keary's childhood was spent in an orphanage for those children unlucky enough to not have someone to foster them, and too young to be apprenticed to a trade. He had it rough, for he was very unpopular with the other children of his age. Dark, quiet, somber, he did not make friends easily, and was set upon unmercifully by the older children. Fighting and standing up for oneself is fine, and Keary did that, but most of the time he was outnumbered. He learned how to avoid the other children, sneak away from the orphanage, and spent many hours in the forest and along the shores of Long Lake. He gained the reputation as a feral child, one with little regard for the law (he was quite adept at stealing food during market) and able to survive even in the harsh wilderness. When he grew old enough to be apprenticed, there was only one taker; an old drunk ex-Maester named Kenneth who made a living counting the coppers of others and verifying the weights and scales and transactions of the marketplace. It was desperately boring work, and Keary hated it, but he was taught letters and numbers and discovered a great treasure: Kenneth had a small personal library of books and scrolls (most stolen, no doubt, for the moneychanger was not a saint), and Keary discovered a whole world that he had not known existed. He read incessantly, when he did not escape and go off by himself in the wild. Keary had an independent, stubborn streak, and tended to bounce from one area of interest to another... he avoided responsibilities and tasks that he did not like, and immersed himself in things that caught his eye. Kenneth was very displeased with this attitude, but then he was drunk much of the time, and Keary found many opportunities to do what he wanted. Jack of all trades, master of none, of course Keary did not follow in the Maester's footsteps; that apprenticeship was wasted. He became a scout, guiding caravans to their destinations, doing tasks for people around the lake, and generally staying free and independent. And if people occasionally found buildings or lockboxes broken into and necessities taken, well, he was far away by then, and not truly suspect. His smuggling skills and administration skills paid off; Keary has a modest amount of wealth, which he invests in several less-than-savory buisnesses and fronts them under several assumed names and guises. While searching for a treasure in the marshes with Catriona, Keary found and befriended a direwolf from the same litter, which he named Mist; Mist is light-colored and a bit more playful than Catriona's Keir. The casting for Keary is Patrick MacGoohan. |
