Background
Malachi was a simple retainer of House Karm, a son of the local gamekeeper. Malachi rescued the heir of the House from a dangerous pair of nyssa, highly cunning cats with the rudiments of speech. As a reward for saving the life of her son, the Lady of Karm promised to send Malachi to Amber, pay for his education and expenses and give him a small but sufficient stipend in order to live in the city and pursue his studies. The Lady made it clear that if Malachi distinguished himself he could not only look forward to Karm's continued patronage, but the she would also help him establish himself as a man of means in Amber itself. No one needed to mention the ignominy that would accompany failure. The rangers of Arden have made it clear that they will accept Malachi if he should decide to leave the university, but the young man has undefined dreams of "making something of himself."
He is a rustic, but full of native intelligence. Big and rugged, he is the sort of young man older men refer to as a "strapping young lad" or a "likely looking young man." He has shoulder-length black hair that never waves or curls and a soft-spoken demeanor many misinterpret as meekness or slow-wittedness. He has the manners and social graces of an older, more rustic time.
His friendly wolf (he dislikes the term 'pet') he raised from a cub after the pack had been slain by a nesting pair of manticores. Radolf is large and intelligent and shares an empathic bond with Malachi. Radolf does not like cities and consequently spends most of his time prowling the Forest Arden near the eaves. The rangers of Arden recognize Radolf and leave him alone as long as he does not menace people or farm animals.
