"Whom did you find?" Derron spoke with a hint of annoyance in his voice. "This is Callon. The minstrel's ward. He's a foolish lad, trying to sneak about, what with us all on edge. But he promised not to do it again. He claims he left something in the cottage. Mariam, if you'll allow the boy in, he'd like to look for it. I'm going back to bed. Come on, Lancer." The dog looked as though he wished to stay with Callon. "No. Come." Hanging his head the dog followed. "That's a good boy. I'll give you a treat when we settle back down." There was still a bite or two of meat left. And oddly the dog liked apples as well. "Thank you, Sir!" Callon called after him. Then he turned to Mariam. "May ... may I look for my ... trinket?" Mariam glanced at Merivel. "I think we can trust him not to steal anything," she said quietly. "Do you need any aid in doing so, or shall I return back to sleep?" Merivel inquired. He also gave Mariam a glance. "Go back to bed," she said. "Callon - I have your trinket in safe keeping. It's upstairs where the Sapta is. Come, we'll get it - but you must be quiet and not disturb those who are sleeping." Callon nodded and followed Mariam inside - and then up the wooden stairs.
