The world is primarily covered by saltwater and numerous archipelagos. Mythology of the islanders tells that at one time there was only the heavens and the waters of the oceans. The god Tagaloa decided to create someplace to stand, and created the Great Rock. Finding himself happy with this, he split the great rock into lesser pieces that he might have stepping stones throughout the ocean. The historians of the islanders speculate that Tagaloa must have wandered far and wide across PalmSea as the number of islands is prodigious. While many islands remain calm fishing communities untroubled by their neighbors, where men gather, men gather power. Some reaches have a consolidation of powers, whether a tribal chieftain, some sort of theocracy, in rare instances a democracy, the most interesting is the Engineer's technocracy of Atropos. To begin with, Atropos rests not on any specific island chain, nor even any island. Atropos rides on the back of Great Vanau, a gigantic sea tortoise. The city is home to the Engineers, a guild of inventors and scientists dedicated to pushing the limits of Palm Sea. Lit by aetherlights and fouled by the discharges of phlogiston powered velociquad carriages, the streets of Atropos are teeming with life and it's said that for the right price anything can be created, even life. The primary Door is found on the island of Nafanua. A family has guarded this site for generations. Many believe it is a door to the underworld, Pulotu. Very few know any differently. The family allows a culture of fear surrounding the door to prevail and carefully watches over who enters and exits. Some members of the family do have the ability to walk the stair and understand the secrets. While the family could be easily overrun by an army, a single enemy or small group could be thwarted. It is rumored that other doors may exsist within the realm but none are confirmed. These rumors include the infamous airship Door that supposedly had it's origins on Atropos. |
