There is a sharp dichotomy between the way that he acts to his daughters and the way that he is in any other company. Generally, Demetri is a blunt, forceful man who does not tolerate fools, indecision or backtack, and who tends to railroad things his way. Under his watch, Cardovan has become richer and more influential than ever before, and he intends to see it continue that way, which in his book means expanding and exporting. In social situations, Demetri is capable of being polite, even charming, but he's clearly more at home with a cigar talking to his merchant and minor noble friends than dancing or hobnobbing with the effete. Something of a ladies man in his youth, Valeria Astronova is his second wife and the mother of his youngest child, Rusalka. Despite his adoration and respect for her, it is said that the love of his life was Antonina Schell, the mother of Theodore and Fantina, who left him when his children were six and four, respectively. Demetri dotes on his children, especially his daughters, showers them in affection and in presents, and overlooks most anything they do, although there are exceptions. He wouldn't like to be embarrassed, or to find his jewels suddenly unmarriable. |
