The man worked constantly, and his popularity was such that the phrase "a plum role" was coined to refer to a role that everyone wanted but assumed would go to him. With his success, Adolf was able to buy a large house on the eastern side of Hanover Square for his dear bride Amelia. Together they raised eight children, bringing to mind the phrase "plumb tired" when referring to the lady of the house. Sadly, Adolf's career and life were cut short while rehearsing a fight scene for a revival of "The Cycling Fish". To make ends meet, the widow began renting rooms to actors and others looking for affordable lodging. Plum House is now managed by Amelia's youngest daughter Amity, a sturdy no-nonsense woman. |
