What Has Gone Before

Novas have been thrust into an already tenuous situation, creating more tensions that have accelerated the decline of modern civilization. Cities are literally split between not only the normal human cliques, but also those that support Novas and those that believe they are the beginning of the end. Social change is desperately needed, but in what form?

Novas have made the first step- and whether it is positive or not depends on whom you talk to. The Teragen? is a society composed of Novas that believe that in order to exist as they were meant to, they should not be subject to the same laws as humans. To test their views, some have chosen to exploit the system, creating a nation for themselves. Further pushing the envelope, they have constructed an Embassy in Night City, supposedly a peacable assembly for interacting with one of the world's major governments. But of course, such a thing is not done unchallenged.

Varys Gennadii Melnikov?, the charismatic leader AWANB (Are We All Not Brothers)?, a rabid anti-Teragen group, came to Night City to lead a peaceful protest and rally against the Embassy, and all that it stood for. Many gathered to hear him speak, but a dark cloud hung over the protest. An assassin was reported to be gunning for Melnikov, and little was known about the hitter. Teragen, in no particular danger from Melnikov as a person, but concerned about him as a martyr assigned a small detail, led by one of their 'assassination specialists', Kingslayer?, to safeguard the man at any cost. Unknown agencies contracted a Nova investigator, Finder?, to do the same. And of course, Melnikov had his own security- both Baseline and Nova.

The assasination attempt was foiled, but the assassin himself was killed along with the Nova courier known as Blitz? in an explosion as he attempted to escape the scene. But Blitz's death was seemingly in vain as after everyone had left in search of the assassin, Melnikov was killed in an explosion right after his speech.

In the meantime, a Nova operative known as Raven? was on the trail of a seemingly unrelated series of murders. Novas were being targeted, seemingly by a Nova serial killer. Those targeted had little in common at first blush. But as the body count began to rack up, Raven was able to find out two things. One, the Novas that were killed all erupted within a short period of time of each other, nearly two years previous, in the second wave of Nova eruptions?. And two, as they died, the other Novas that had erupted within that time period received a boost in power. Insignificant at first, these Novas began to come to the forefront of their power bracket, doing the heretofore impossible feat of approaching the next Mazarin-Rashoud? Node Range Bracket.

Once he began to piece things together, his employer began to formulate a list of likely targets and their locations. Utilizing a different team, the Novas were notified and offered sanctuary. Many refused, and the body count began to rise.

As others began to piece together the information about the killings, Novas within the bracketed time period began to be viewed as valued commodities. Companies hired them, on the basis of what they would become, and hoarded the Novas in their employ. There were also copycat killings, and it became unsafe for any Novas to be unaffiliated, as the copycats were less discriminating about their targets.

A group of Novas in the same time period of eruption were assigned to investigate the assassination of Melnikov. In light of the situation, it was discussed pulling them off of the case. But at this point, they had delved so deeply into the case, the UEC deemed it would be detrimental to change investigators. In order to satisfy TeamTomorrow that the assets that they had recruited would be protected, Hiro of the UEC superhero team was assigned to bodyguard the group.

However, this proved to not be enough to protect the fledgling team. Before Hiro could be properly transferred, the team was involved in a major firefight in a Triad compound in Night City while following a lead. Though ostensively, then won the fight, in truth, unknown entities used the fight to decimate the team. The UEC pulls the plug on the investigation, ensconcing their remaining 'assets' in a Night City HQ to protect them and regroup.
